[B]Introduction to Rice Transplanter[/B]


A [B]Rice Transplanter[/B] is a motorized equipment to transplant rice seedling onto paddy field mechanically, requires less time and labor than manual transplanting. Mechanical Transplanting of Rice is the process of transplanting specifically raised seedling of rice as a mat (mat type nursery) using a self propelled mechanical rice transplanter at pre-determined and desired spacing. The mechanical rice transplanter is fitted with a tray like a roof top on which mat type nurseries are placed during the operation.

A rice transplanter comprises (general view of the machine is shown below):

ˇ A seedling tray like a shed roof on which mat type rice nursery is set.
ˇ A seedling tray shifter that shifts the seedling tray either side of machine to required mat width.
ˇ Pickup forks that pick up a seedling from mat type nursery on the seedling tray and put the seedling into the earth as if the seedling were taken between human fingers.

[B]Advantages of Mechanical Rice Transplanting[/B]



ˇ Efficient use of resources by saving on labour, cost saving, water saving
ˇ Timely transplanting of seedlings of optimal age
ˇ Ensures uniform spacing and optimum plant density with 2-3 seedlings/hills
ˇ Higher productivity compared to traditional methods
ˇ Less incidence of disease due to less root injury
ˇ Improving soil health through eliminating puddling
ˇ Reduces stress, drudgery and health risks of farm labourers
ˇ Generates employment and alternate sources of income for rural youth through custom services on nursery raising and mechanical transplanting

[B]Structure of Self Propelled Mechanical Rice Transplanter[/B]


The self-propelled mechanical rice transplanter has two detachable parts i.e. front and rear portions. The front portion has diesel engine (range of 1.5HP depending on the make), gear box, PTO shaft, and toothed iron wheel for field operation (schematic power train layout is shown below). The rear portion has floating board, nursery platform, transplanting forks, linkage for height adjustment of float board and mat table side shifting mechanism.

ˇ The floating board of the transplanter serves as a base and also helps in movement of the machine over excess water in the field. It also serves as a platform for placement of nursery during transplanting operation.

ˇ The self propelled mechanical rice transplanters have a provision of transplanting 4 rows in single pass with spacing arrangements i.e. 25 cm x 12 cm. Number of plants per hill can be varied (2-4 seedlings/ hill) by adjusting the position of fingers through screws vis-ā-vis pick forks needle. To and fro movement of nursery platform is guided by the sliding mechanism provided below mat table.

    Just curious - why blog this? Looks like most of it's copied straight out of Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice_transplanter

    Nice CAD views, though. Is this something you've worked on? Although I see you're working in sales & marketing, not engineering.

    The text is copied just to present it as a case study. Whereas we have done the real engineering work, based on the prevailing conditions; we have designed the complete structure and mechanisms. We took almost 4 months complete this activity. Three engineers dedicatedly worked on this. The scope was to carry out concept design till development. This is done using Solid Works. The input available were some videos and photographs.
